MWI 2024: A look back at the record-breaking numbers

Women’s esports are a continually growing field, and the Esports World Cup, alongside the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Women’s Invitational 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is doing well to confirm its stellar development. On July 27th, 2024, the grand final of the event took place, which saw  Omega Empress  and Team Vitality Female going head-to-head, with the Philippine team shining as the eventual victors. We take a look back at the tournament and see some of the numbers that were on display.

A ground-breaking prize pool

Within the collaboration with the EWC, the MWI 2024 has entered a new domain – one where it has seen records broken. With a $500,000 prize pool, and $180,000 going to the winning team – Omega Empress became the recipients of the largest ever amount awarded to a team in women’s MLBB history. As the only women’s event at the EWC, this sets a huge precedent for the MWI and women’s MLBB moving forward – one that we will hopefully continue to see growing.

Viewership numbers grow

With the MLBB Mid Season Cup 2024 already coming through as the most-watched event at the EWC, the MWI 2024 tournament has definitely managed to stand up and take some accolades for itself. With a peak viewership of 265,117 during the Grand Final, and an average of 74,352, the tournament became the second most watched of all MWI events – and the most watched women’s event of 2024, so far.

Once again, time zone differences may have resulted in a smaller number of viewers at the time, but those who braved the time difference to view the Grand Finals definitely enjoyed an amazing show. The event saw a vast majority of coverage on platforms such as TikTok and Facebook, with YouTube’s extensive coverage also coming into play.

Ray Ng, the head of Esports Ecosystems at MOONTON Games had the following to say on the spectacular tournament,

At the end of the day, MWI 2024 stands as a fantastic example of just how far women’s esports has come and how big its following is. With plenty of room to grow, women’s esports events can continue to grow in the coming years, and we hope to see much more at the next Esports World Cup – with MLBB being the stepping stone for others to shine in the future.
