Chinese Streaming Platform Huya Suspends Official LCK Broadcasts: Financial Struggles and Monetization Challenges

Chinese streaming platform Huya, which has been broadcasting LCK matches in previous years, did not initiate transmissions as scheduled after the start of the 2024 Spring Split, sparking discussions among netizens. Recently, South Korean media sought confirmation from Riot Games Korea personnel, and official responses shed light on the situation.

A representative stated, "Unfortunately, due to the absence of a contract renewal for LCK broadcasting rights by a Chinese platform this year, the official broadcast of LCK in China will be temporarily suspended." When asked if this is related to China's "Hallyu ban," the representative responded, "We do not understand the situation on the Chinese side."

Some South Korean internet users speculated that Huya's decision not to purchase LCK rights this year may be due to continuous losses and challenges in monetization. According to LCK broadcasting regulations, Huya is unable to insert advertisements during LCK broadcasts. Consequently, they have resorted to continuously playing videos of Doran singing during match breaks.

Due to the official broadcast arrangement, users generally do not send gifts in the live stream, which is Huya's primary revenue source. Additionally, Huya cannot generate income through advertising during LCK broadcasts. In contrast, during LPL broadcasts, revenue is generated through advertisements, although the excessive number of ads during LPL events has been criticized by viewers.
