IEM Cologne 2024: G2 2-1 Eliminates Astralis

IEM Cologne 2024, Group A Loser's Bracket, the do-or-die match between G2 and Astralis. G2 crushed their opponent with a 13-1 score in the first map, Astralis made a comeback in the second map, but in the third map Ancient, G2 continued their dominance, defeating their opponent 2-1.

Map BP
1. Astralis banned Anubis
2. G2 banned Vertigo
3. Astralis picked Dust2
4. G2 picked Mirage
5. Astralis banned Nuke
6. G2 banned Inferno
7. Ancient  Decider

Map 1: Dust2

The first map was Astralis's choice, Dust2, with G2 starting on the defensive side. In the pistol round, G2 cleared A long and encountered Astralis rushing A short, huNter held his ground and took down two players, allowing G2 to easily secure the pistol round. After an ECO round, they moved to the rifle round where Astralis's mid push strategy was countered by Snax, allowing G2 to maintain their advantage. A 4-0 streak forced Astralis to pause, and upon returning, they were hit by another aggressive push from G2, making it difficult for Astralis to even enter the bombsite. G2, feeling confident, began to showcase their individual skills, with malbsMd securing a triple kill, pushing Astralis into another ECO round. By the time device managed to secure a point through a solo B push, the score was already 1-8. m0NESY's AWP shot crushed Astralis's hopes of gaining momentum, and they officially collapsed, trailing 1-11 at halftime.

In the second half, G2's push through short with a headshot led to Astralis losing all hope, ultimately losing the first map 1-13.

Map 2: Mirage

The second map was G2's pick, Mirage, with Astralis starting on the defensive side. In the pistol round, G2 used their utility to take A site, followed by an invasion of CT spawn, with NiKo finishing off the round. After an ECO round, they moved to the rifle round where G2 gained an early kill advantage in mid, allowing them to continue scoring. With their hot hands and relaxed mindset, G2 became a terrifying opponent, making it difficult for Astralis to win direct engagements and constantly facing numerical disadvantages. Fortunately, bro and jabbi's multi-kills provided some relief, allowing Astralis to catch up in points. However, when G2 returned from an ECO round, their aggression remained strong, not only in firepower but also in anticipating Astralis's strategies. With NiKo's fake play wiping out A site, G2 led 8-4 at halftime.

In the second half, Astralis grouped up at B site in the pistol round, and after Snax's solo push failed, G2 lost the pistol round. In their first rifle round, lacking utility, G2 was overrun by Astralis's A1 push, and the next round saw a fast push through arches. The teams were back on equal footing, but this time m0NESY had an AWP, and the coordination between malbsMd and huNter at arches and B small worked out, giving G2 the lead again. However, Astralis didn't want to let their opponent pull ahead easily, with device stepping up and securing a double kill in a clutch situation to tie the score again. Riding this momentum, Astralis launched a wave of attacks, with their synchronization on point, ultimately taking the second map 13-10.

Map 3: Ancient

The decider map was Ancient, with G2 starting on the offensive side. In the pistol round, they executed an A split, securing the round, and replicated the strategy to win the ECO round. In the rifle round, device picked up an AWP, helping Astralis gain an early kill advantage and secure their first point. After that, G2 began to showcase their individual skills, with malbsMd and m0NESY making impressive plays, one breaking through the front and the other clutching rounds, securing key kills and extending G2's lead. Astralis started to show signs of collapse again, with Staehr at A site constantly getting picked off, leading to G2's 9-3 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Astralis tried to replicate G2's pistol round strategy, but malbsMd at A site took down three players, extending the lead. Seeing the situation was hopeless, Astralis didn't put up much resistance, and G2 ultimately defeated Astralis 2-1.
