NIP Esports Director Erik Wendel Leaves Organization

NIP Esports Director Erik Wendel Leaves Organization

The esports director of Ninjas in Pyjamas , Erik Wendel, has decided to leave the organization after four years of service. In his farewell letter, he admitted that the reason was a personal tragedy and emotional burnout. His departure could be a turning point for the club, which has only just begun to regain the community's trust.

I’m leaving not because I want to, but because I need to. It’s time for me to take care of my private life and family for a while.
Erik Wendel

Journey Through Crisis
Erik joined Ninjas in Pyjamas about four years ago. Two years later, he took over the leadership of the club's esports direction during one of the most unstable periods in its history. At that time, NIP's image in the eyes of the community was undermined, and Wendel consciously took the risk to change the situation.

There were a lot of risks for me, as I knew it would be an uphill struggle from the start with the community's perception of 'NIP management'. But I accepted the challenge – I had a chance to make a difference from the inside.
Erik Wendel

He saw his mission not only as internal reforms but also as rebuilding the connection with fans, bringing back legendary players, and creating an honest, open atmosphere within the team.

Personal Cost and Decision to Leave
Even though the team did not achieve major trophies during his tenure, Wendel believes he laid a solid foundation. However, as he admitted, over the years, he fully dedicated himself to the club and lost sight of what was most important:

During the past year, I slowly lost an important person in my immediate family, and I wasn’t there for them; I was completely absorbed in NIP. It’s time for me to take care of my private life and family for a while.
Erik Wendel

What's Next for NIP and Wendel
This summer, Wendel plans to spend time with family and friends. In the fall, he will decide whether to return to esports. He doesn't rule out another path either:

Maybe I stay in esports, maybe I don’t, time will tell.
Erik Wendel

Erik Wendel's story is a reminder that behind the successes of esports organizations are not only the players but also those who remain behind the scenes. His candid admission of burnout and priorities is rare in an industry where personal struggles are often hidden.

This has been more than a job, it has been an honor.
Erik Wendel
