LoL players agree what the support role actually is

The support role has always been an interesting one in League of Legends, with many players unsure of the actual purpose of the role.

Potentially because the role arguably has the most variety of champions in the game. From supportive ADCs, to mages that still pump out an insane amount of damage, to your generic tank that is there to frontline and protect them. Basically, any type of LoL champion you can think of has probably been in the support position at one point or another.

This has sparked a debate amongst a recent Reddit thread, where the poster was complaining that Brand in the support position does not make sense. This then sparked a lengthy debate between players, who all went over their opinions on what the support position actually means.

Although it is called the support position, many players in LoL play mages in that position, such as a Lux, or Neeko etc. They are essentially able to build up a lot of ability power without having to farm, which is rather overpowered if you think about it. One player said, "Support is a misnomer in LoL if you interpret it the same way as you do in most other games. The more precise term for that is "Enchanter". In League support is really just the "no farm duo lane" role. And they are right, they may not be the one farming, but if a Lux is intentionally or unintentionally getting the kills in lane, it's not a bad thing as they will be able to Carry the game.

Another player added, "I'd also say he's (Brand) like a poke mage, designed to create space for the ADC to be allowed to touch the wave." Which is another valid reason to play these more aggressive picks in the bottom lane. If the enemy ADC or support is petrified of walking up to a Brand or Lux, those champions have done their job correctly, because as much as they are a Carry in their own right, they're also space creators.
