Evil Geniuses announces November shutdown, closing a historic chapter for Dota 2
Evil Geniuses will cease competitive and day-to-day operations on November 2, 2026, ending more than 25 years of activity across esports.
The organization confirmed the closure in a statement explaining that efforts to establish a sustainable business had been unsuccessful. Limited sponsorship and investment, combined with the increasing cost of competing at the highest level, were cited as central challenges.
EG said it would work with affected players, coaches and staff as it winds down operations.
A defining name in North American Dota
Although Evil Geniuses left Dota 2 in 2023, its history remains closely connected to the game.
The organization’s greatest achievement came at The International 2015, when fear of god , SumaiL , Universe , Aui_2000 and purpleparad1se secured North America’s first TI championship. That lineup also won the Dota 2 Asia Championships earlier the same year.
Across subsequent seasons, the EG jersey was worn by players including Arteezy , zai , Cr1t-, Fly , s4 , RAMZES666 and iceiceice . Its final Dota campaign featured a South American roster before the organization withdrew from the scene.
A former captain reflects on the closure
Former TI-winning captain and EG chief executive purpleparad1se suggested that a narrower competitive focus might have offered a different path. His comments outlined a hypothetical strategy built around retaining Dota, relocating to Europe and pursuing sponsorship.
Those remarks represent his assessment of the organization’s history. EG’s official statement attributes the shutdown to its inability to operate responsibly under current business conditions.
