Launders Steam account has been hacked
ENT2024-09-17

Launders Steam account has been hacked

The hack occurred after scammers convinced him to scan a fake QR code on a fake tournament website. Launders said the scam began when his friends list was hacked and someone asked him to “reserve a spot for the team.”

Other thefts in the CS community

Many other CS players have also reported incidents of identity theft and fraud on Steam. With the increase in these incidents, the community is advised to exercise extreme caution when opening unknown links or scanning QR codes. Fraudsters are increasingly pretending to be a trusted person on the victim's friends list.

The situation of Launders repeats the experience of many well-known figures in the CS community. Users should be vigilant and protect their accounts carefully, especially with Steam Guard and two-factor authentication (2FA).

Details of the hack

One of the most baffling aspects of the hack was how the crook managed to bypass Steam Guard so quickly. Launders wondered how someone was able to disable his Steam Guard authentication and immediately gain access to his account to conduct exchanges.

How can someone disable my Steam Guard and immediately start swapping?
he asked

This has raised concerns about the effectiveness of Steam's security measures, such as 2FA and family view mode, especially when even well-known personalities fall victim to such scams.

Stolen items

About $100,000 was stolen from his account, where from skins there were 5 knives and 2 pairs of gloves, also 1 AK-47.

Despite the theft, the accounts to which the stolen Launders skins were transferred have already received a trade ban. However, this brings little comfort to those affected by such hacks, as their valuable items remain unreturned.
